    RESEARCH INTERESTS

    My research interests include three parts. The first part is non-point source pollution monitoring and management such as best management practice (BMP) design, low impact development (LID) study etc. Applying these research results to Sponge City development is one of my main focus recently. The second part is gross pollution control. The third part is urban water system optimization, which aims at reducing water resources consumption and gross pollution discharge from cities.

    RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

    Postdoctoral Scholar. Experimental and modeling work on stormwater monitoring and management. In charge of characterizing particles in highway runoff, a part of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)’s highway stormwater management project. Main tasks include investigating characteristics of particles in highway runoff, experimental and modeling research on particles settling behavior, creating innovative best management designs, modeling of particle and pollutant removal for BMPs.     Research Assistant.  Field, experimental and modeling work on stormwater monitoring and management. Mainly involved in Caltrans highway runoff monitoring and management program. Major duties included:

    Installed, checked, and adjusted rainfall and flow monitoring machines on site in rainy seasons.

    Took highway runoff samples on rainy days.

    Performed basic water quality analysis (hardness, alkalinity, pH etc.).

    In charge of research on characterization of particles in highway runoff. Investigated various particle sizing techniques, chose proper particle analysis instrument, performed particle analysis, and conducted further research work on particles including experimental protocol for particle size distribution (PSD) analysis, change of PSD over time and temperature, particle first flush behavior, characteristics of particles over entire hydrograph, relationship between particles and other water quality parameter, and modeling work on BMPs for particle and associated pollutant removal.

    Research Assistant. Designed a high efficient biofilter to treat wastewater. Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore. 1999-2000

    Environmental Engineer. In charge of water and wastewater treatment plant design. Responsibilities included process flow design, equipment evaluation and selection, budget calculation, and bid document writing. After signing agreement, responsible for construction design and drawing, technical supervision of structure constructing and commissioning,  and operation manual writing. For some projects, performed raw wastewater quality analysis, pilot-scale treatment experiment design and implementation, and research report writing.  Beijing Tsinghua Environmental Engineering Co. Ltd., Beijing, P.R.China 1997-1999

    Student. Designed experimental facilities for waste tire pyrolisis including a quartzose tube heater; Drew the shop drawings for facilities; Performed waste tire pyrolisis experiment and collected the gas product for spectroscopic analysis.
